I'm building a small dream on the east coast of Tasmania and fabricating my own windows using double glazing panels and timber frames. Most are built-in fixed and a few sliding doors - the usual mix.
I am told by my building surveyor that the windows are to be certified as complying with AS2074 - and be labelled accordingly! Has anyone managed to find a way to have windows certified without crating them off to the CSIRO for wing and spray analysis?
It's a job-stopper!

Keith never heard of such a thing but that don't mean it aint necessarily so - as the song goes.

A mate of mine built all his own windows for a house reno in Balmain Sydney, because he wanted to match what was there and couldn't buy them. He did this in the mid 90's but I dont think he brought it to anybody's attention.

If you know somebody who works in Tafe or its equivalent in TAS they might be able to find out for you.

Thanks for the reply Ardy.
The AS 2047 is a relatively recent standard (another one!) I think from 2006, and my understanding is that it may not apply to windows constructed on-site, architecturally designed windows or second hand-recycled-replacement windows. The problem is that the Australian Windows Association and Standards Australia have not provided building surveyors with a method of assessment other than the wording on a sticker on a manufacturers window frame.
The existing standard AS 1288 still applies and I have no problems complying here because it is related to glazed area, glass strength and generally safety issues that an owner-builder is controlling.
The AS 2047 is a wind-load/water-tightness rating and is impossible to verify for owner builders who build their own.
Am I missing something?

Yes with all these regulations for new builders it sure is making it difficult - they say what you have to do just not how to do it - I just got a quote for windows and doors to comply with Vic law [double glazed/safety glass for bathrooms and entries] and it came in at almost $14000- ouch!

It wont be long and we get told what we have for breakfast. Sounds to me another job for the boys here. I was going to use second hand windows thinking that recycling is a green thing to do and safe some money that could be spend on extra insulation or solar power. Makes me wonder how much our rulemakers are interested in sustainable building and saving the planet.
I be very interested to hear how you go Keith.
cheers
Reiner

I would contact NATA.
http://www.nata.asn.au/
They may be able to tell you who can do the testing for you.
I did a quick search and couldn't find a listing for that AS, but may be worth a call, but it may only be window manufacturers that are set up to do the tests as it would be pretty specific. Best case for you would be to find an independant lab that can do the test, window manufacturers are unlikely to do it as they would want to sell you their windows, but if they don't have much work, you never know, but they could charge you the equivalent of new windows.
