Doesn't sound outrageous. Suggest you put together a similar ikea package as a comparison, you can price it all from their web page. You can download planning software here:
http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_AU/rooms_ideas/splashplanners.html

I think Harlig White is the cheapest finish. If your kitchen isn't a fair bit cheaper than an equivalent ikea kitchen then maybe you need to get more quotes.

thanks bruce i checked out ikea and their cabinets are 18 inch whilst kitset are only 16 inch price wise their pretty even
the problem ive found with ikea and bunnings is their sizes arent very flexible whilst kitset goes up in increments of 50mm
with all their products so makes it easier to fit into most spaces
i know the next house i build im buying the kitchen 1st then designing around that lol
ive worked out a temporary solution as money is tight and we need to move in asap
kitset wanted 9300 for kitchen and laundry ive redisgned both and can buy just the shells
at bunnings for 2758 for both kitchen and laundry then source the benchtops elsewhere
then eventually week by week buy a door here and there until its finished.
not going to save a bundle but frees up money for plumbing and hot water
as long as cupboards and benches are in for sinks and stove and tiling done for power points
it should work out.
but thanks for ikea their kitchens definately look like one of the better ones :)

I have assembled three ikea kitchens and they go together really well. They also do solid oak doors for a fraction of the price you would pay anywhere else. But their carcasses are fairly pricey, so it is a good test - if your kitchen supplier doesn't come in well under the ikea price then they are probably overcharging.

The thing with dimensions is a limitation of the ikea product. They do have several different width cabinets so you can usually do something with two narrower cabinets instead of one wider etc. Sometimes you can fudge it a bit with trim at the ends, and you can often pull in a bit at the dishwasher recess because you don't need a carcass there. As you suggested - best solution is to design your kitchen cabinets first and then adjust your house plan. Just remember to allow 10mm for plaster at the walls because floor plans usually dimension from the brickwork.

G'day Shelley
I have been reading your thread with interest. I love your " take a deep breath and jump in" approach to building
Regarding your weatherboards was the problem because you screwed them on and they buckled because they were unable to move?

Hope your move in goes well

Cheers Ray
